Mother’s day is celebrated all over the world to honor and appreciate mothers and their sacrifices. Mother’s Day celebration can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans who held festivals to honor the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. Although, the modern holiday of Mother's Day can be traced to the United States in the 19th century, before the Civil War, when Ann Reeves Jarvis created “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” in order to educate local women on how to care for their children. After her death, her daughter; Anna Jarvis held a memorial in her name at St Andrew's Methodist Church in West Virginia. That same year, she campaigned to make Mother's Day a recognized holiday in the United States. Alongside Julia Ward Howe, a peace activist, and suffragette, they both pushed for the creation of Mother’s Day; dedicated to peace. Anna Jarvis was able to honor her campaign and successfully set aside a day to honor all mothers who she believed were "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world"; as Mother’s Day became an official holiday in 1914. Although, many of us are confused as to why we celebrate Mother’s Day twice a year; so we’ll tell you why.

Why are There 2 Mothers' Day?

In the United States and many other countries, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in the month of May. In some other countries like Britain, it is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, known as Mothering Sunday; where pilgrims visit their home parishes and their mother church on Laetare Sunday, although it is largely replaced by Mother’s Day. To explain further, Mothering Sunday began in the 16th century and is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent; when pilgrims travel to their Mother Church. Whereas, Mother's Day began in America by Anna Jarvis, to honor her own (biological) mother, and is now an official holiday to celebrate and honor mothers all over the world. Mothering Sunday is a religious festival, and it refers to Mother Church, not to your mother.

The end result is that although unrelated, Mothering Sunday is often referred to as Mother's Day. As such, there is no two Mother’s Day celebration. This finally brings us to the best gift ideas for Mother’s Day.
